Press Release – Bridge Inspection Program (September 2026)
Auditor General identifies deficiencies in province’s Bridge Inspection Program
Charlottetown, PE, September 3, 2025 - 15 years after its first audit on bridge inspections, the Office of the Auditor General has again identified gaps in the province's Bridge Inspection Program.
The latest audit looked at bridge inspections and repairs and maintenance from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2024. While it was found that inspections were done by certified professionals and inspection reports were completed, auditors also identified:
- incorrect classification
- non-compliance with inspection timelines
- inconsistencies with repairs, maintenance, and rehabilitation
With bridges being a critical aspect of road infrastructure on Prince Edward Island, effective management is important. "A well-managed Bridge Inspection Program ensures the safety of Islanders and connection between communities," said Darren Noonan, Auditor General. "Compliance with recognized standards and best practices is essential."
The audit report made seven recommendations to government, which were accepted and will be monitored over the next four years for progress.
